Help make the 2009 Nexus Camp come into form. Below is a live add-to (please don't substract unless you wrote it) list of issues, ideas, concepts and solutions. When editing please add new ideas to the bottom of the lists and add your name next to each point. Ex: (ChrisP)
(Nowak) lets think about this some more everyone. I left that meeting still pondering, how is this tree really representing evolution. I feel like we got stuck with this picture and didn't quite finish the idea. I thought quite a bit aout it and came up with this. the real evolution, both spiritual and phisical resides in the mind, as does most of reality. real evolution is the process of learning and making new connections in the brain between neurons. as this happens we begin to think about things in a different way. we are all evolving every day as we make these connections. i think a huge neaural net would be epic. check out this video

i am leaning more toward something like this. it has a very tree feel, but looks more like a brain firing. I think there is a ton of ways to make some cool interactive art pieces that go along with the theme of this as well. let me know any input you have. p.s. i know the music is horrible in this video, but this center piece is ILL!!!!
(Katie) I agree. The neuron tree feels like the perfect combination of all our ideas in the discussion the other day: what evolution means to us (it's all in the brain); what is the purpose of nexus - 'to blow people's minds'; and the beautiful tree idea. Even the imagery of a tree developing from sapling to fully grown, which alia was talking about, is strongly analogous to that of a neuron developing from axon to mature neuron see http://www.meaningfullearning.info/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/cajall-neuron.jpg and http://www.holisticeducator.com/Neuron.jpg. (making and breaking connections in our brains, which we can do even when we are older - even against what we are genetically disposed to do - eg neurolinguistic programming). It could be interactive by each of the neuron trees in the network/forest firing separately with their own effects, until they were fired in the right sequence, at which point the main massive neuron would go off in a massive light show/ brain storm, which would represent an idea happening, or an emotion, a memory, a feeling, etc.
M.A. It would be cool to have the neurons firing in sync with the music. Not a very hard thing to do. Mark Pauley worked on this project for false profit where when you walked by a tree these little sensors detected you and lit up all these lights in the tree. Wouldn't it be sweet if we had sensors like that, that would pick up peoples motions and trigger the lights to turn on in sync with the music... so the more people the more neurons fire?
dirtball - I'm new to this wiki stuff, so pardon the flubbs. I struggled a bit with the tree concept and how it connected with the evolution them as well. The neural theme I think can give us a lot more leeway to do a number of things: 1. use more artistic license with design 2. segment elements of the camp for different crews to own 3. build more interactivity into the production with sensors / buttons / interfaces at various points 4. Be less limited structurally and potentially build a more stimulating set with less infrastructure. I think we could even build plant / animal / mycelial / technotic elements connecting to the central neuron should we desire. I also think initials are insufficient since I don't know anyone's last name. Can we go by familiar names?:)
(Big Daddy) - The whole neuron concept is great and really expands our options on the evolution theme. Aimee and I did a little brain research and came up with a few ideas... every human brain has mirror neurons. These are brain patterns that form when you see someone else performing say a physical action. Brain patterns mirror even more for emotions. We have empathy for a reason. Watching somebody do something is like doing it yourself... it starts the neural pathways that will eventually teach your muscles what to do! This is one of the ways that humans have evolved to survive the various environments. Based a bit on what C. Nowak was talking about I had a few ideas to add. The human brain has different centers for various things... all linked. Pleasure, visual, language (communication), memory... etc. We could have each of these centers represented by domes or some distinguishing area. Each area would be connected both physically and by actual phone line!( maybe video feed as well) If we added the video we could perhaps project something from each area on a centralized screen. ErinB has been playing around with video feedback and the results have been pretty amazing. The "visual center" could have a whole interactive video system with multiple screens all being influenced by the people partying in that space. In the memory dome or area there could be pictures from previous burns and/or a way to make new memories. (Digital pics or video??) All of this would be under a Neural Net... with all kinds of crazy lights at night and lots of shade during the day..... Chris P did you make it up to Nowak's... any visuals for us to look at? I hope you can incorporate some of these ideas.

(erin b) i like the way the 3d design looks, but unfortunately it wouldnt be able to hold itself up unless the support beams were truss. heres a revised version i made that i think is easier to do with mostly cables:

(erin b) i was thinking of a couple things:
5 phones around the party, each with a big red button mounted next to it and instructions
saying that you must push all 5 buttons at the same time to fire the neuron. when all 5 red
buttons are pushed at the same time the big flame cannon(mounted on the peak of the structure)
goes off.
an arch way, covered in small flames. when someone walks through a motion sensor makes
the flames get bigger momentarily. when theres a constant flow of people the flames will
stay bigger.
DNA helixes around some of the supports, where the balls of DNA each have a LED inside
of them and the horizontal bars are made of E L wire.

(CN)I like the flame thrower idea and the enterance alot. not sure about the dna placement on the poles. Did everyone see the moop map this year? we got bright red. it looks BAD. I feel bad. who can we talk to about this?
(Big Daddy) Can you post the link to the moop map? (I haven't seen it myself) I'd like to know specifics... what was left?? Maybe we should plan to have a dedicated crew out there for the dpw clean up to watch out for our interests..... any volunteers?
(Dirtball) BTW, I'm digging the progression of the design here. One concern I have is cost and demands on labor. Looks like we may have to subcontract the Dozers from Fraggle Rock to sew up all of this fabric. They don't know about the UAW yet:)
(Corey) I like the ideas that are coming from this. What I like most about the neuron idea is that it's wide open. Theres a million things we could do to make this super sick. I definitely like the design work you did Chris, watching that movie really makes it come alive. Sounds cool to have the flame throwers synchronized and interactive. Is the fire bowl coming out again? Sounds cool to have the lights be motion activated somehow. I like the idea of "more people more neuron activity" It should look like it's going off when it really is going off! On another note: Is anyone planning on meeting this weekend still, or putting it off to the weekend after thanksgiving? whats the word?

(Corey 12/10) 1 quick question about the layout so far.... Since I know that we are not really gonna have a BM X Games area...any ideas as to what we could fill that space with?

(Corey 12/20) Hey Chris P... what needs to happen to get a detailed schematic of this whole structure? I need a floor plan with diameter of domes, center-to-center dimensions between domes and posts, and elevations for all posts, domes, etc. I'm trying to work out the details of how all this is really gonna go together, and that info would be very helpful. Lemme know what I can do to help make it happen.

A Nexus Sign that consist of a see through fire cauldron b ut around the cauldron a tree . so in other words. a sick see through fire cauldron that we can shine LEDS at so you can see a 10 ft. muti color-bubbling fire cauldron. around the cauldron you construct a tree that has the word NEXUS carved out of the tree so you can see the bubbling water in the cauldron. so the Nexus sign would be a 10 ft fire tree!
